Author Interview with Faith Blum - Space Kitties Anthology 2

Today I am celebrating the new release of the second Space Kitties Anthology! To honor the occasion, I am hosting and interview with my friend and fellow writer, Faith Blum. She contributed a story to the anthology inspired by something we both love.

Hello Faith and welcome!

What is the synopsis of your Space Kitties tale?
My name is Data and I am a cat. I never expected to go on a spaceship or become a hero. Somehow, though, God had plans for both to happen. This is my story.

What inspired you to write it?
Well, E. Kaiser kept kind of bugging me about it, but since I normally write Westerns, I wasn't really sure I could do anything. Then I decided to take my love of cats and Star Trek and put them together into a short story that I wasn't sure I would submit. Then I kind of fell in love with Data and the rest of the cats, so I quickly edited it and sent it in.

How long did it take you to write?
I really don't remember when I started or finished, but I think it only took a couple of weeks.

Was there any music you liked to listen to while you wrote?
I can't remember for sure, but I'm sure it involved my Star Trek Pandora station.

What was your reaction when you found out that your story had been selected for the anthology?
Jaw-dropping surprise. I didn't expect to win at all. I'm not a sci-fi writer, didn't really do any world-building, and even made my "chapter headings" basically the same as the Star Trek theme:

The last frontier. These are the voyages of the cat Data. His mission: To exterminate all mice, to aid the crew in searching for new life, and new cultures. To daringly go where no cat has gone before.

Are you a plotter or a panster?
Mostly panster, but I do plot sometimes, especially when I get stuck.

What elements does your ideal story contain?
Something to do with the Old West, maybe a mail order bride or a gunslinger, a touch of romance, a mystery, and a realistic timeline and plot.

Has there been an author or non-author person who has influenced your writing more than anyone else?
This is probably a cliche answer for a Christian author, but God has influenced me the most. Even when I don't really realize, sometimes. My latest novel, The Solid Rock, really showed me that. I wrote the rough draft in July 2015, but didn't edit it until Octoberish. Some of the things the main character was going through, and the advice he got were so pertinent to what I needed at that time. God is amazing that way!

Have you written any other books?
Yes, I have. I have a total of 10 books published. The Hymns of the West is a 5 novel series showing how God's providence brings two families with two different worldviews of living together in ways only He could have planned. My spin-off series of Hymns of the West Novellas is based on minor characters introduced in books 3 and 5 of the novel series, although only three are published yet, the other three are coming out in June, July, and August 2016. I also have a short story published in an anthology with 5 other authors and a Science Fiction short story collection.

What stories can we expect from you in the future?
As I just mentioned, I have three novellas coming out the next three months. I'm also working on my next series which should be published in early 2017. That series is all about orphans. I have some other projects I'm working on as well, but I'm keeping my lips sealed on those for a while yet.

Author Bio:
Faith Blum started writing at an early age. She started even before she could read! She even thought she could write better than Dr. Seuss. Now that she's grown up a little more, she knows she will probably never reach the success of Dr. Seuss, but that doesn't stop her from trying.

When she isn't writing, Faith enjoys doing many right-brained activities such as reading, crafting, playing piano, and playing games with her family. One of her dreams is to visit Castle City, Montana to see the ghost town she chose for her characters to live in. She currently lives on a hobby farm with her family in Wisconsin.
