Author Interview:
1) What inspired this retelling of 12 Dancing Princesses?
I love the 12 Dancing Princesses fairy tale and have been planning to retell it as part of the Beyond the Tales series from the moment I started writing Dagger's Sleep (book 1). I took a lot of inspiration from the various versions of this tale and had a lot of fun weaving in nods to the original versions.
2) What is your favorite fairy tale and why?
Beauty and the Beast has always been a favorite since I was little (and not just the Disney version). I guess that's kind of cliche, since a lot of writers connect with bookish Belle, lol.
3) Which fairy tale has the best heroine?
I am fascinated by the heroines of the Goose Girl and the Wild Swans fairy tales. In both of these stories, the heroine perseveres through a lot of trials and hardships in order to rescue a kingdom or her family. As it would have it, my next book in the Beyond the Tales series is going to be a Goose Girl and Wild Swans mash up.
4) Why did you choose to tell this story this way?
Since I was writing this tale as part of my Beyond the Tales series, I adapted it to fit my already established world building, such as the way curses work in this series and the Appalachian-meets-medieval setting. I was already working with a lot of characters from previous books, especially Alex. This tale especially worked well to present him with a number of temptations and challenges to test the character development that has been happening throughout this series.
5) What about fairy tales attracts you to them?
I love how fairy tale retellings can take a familiar tale and rework it to make it surprising, and I love reading a fairy tale retelling and finding all the little nods to the original versions. It's kind of like finding Easter Eggs in a movie, lol.
6) What other projects do you have in the works and when can we read them?
Besides the Goose Girl and Wild Swans retelling that will be Beyond the Tales book 4, I'm also working on a Bluebeard/Robin Hood novella. Both of these should be releasing in 2021 sometime, though I don't have release dates or more details that I can share just yet.
7) Why do you enjoy writing and what is your favorite part of the process?
I love the joy of crafting a story and watching it come together. I love both the drafting and the editing process, and usually by the time I'm sick of the one, it's time to switch to the other.
